At Madison and 68th St. the French childrenswear couture house Bonpoint found a perfect location for its flagship North American store. To provide a clean, distinctive palette for the store's signature design, the centuries-old brownstone needed a complete architectural overhaul. RND was brought in to creatively restructure the space. We opened up the rear facade with large-scale windows and cantilevered the second floor slab to create a soaring double-height space. We extended the width of the building by covering the rear alley and placed longitudinal copper skylights to let in natural light. Moving all building machinery to the roof, we freed the backyard and finished the store with a renovation of the entire brownstone's landmark facade, complete with original detailing. The result was a light, open space that Bon Point's interior team could fill with a clean, color-suffused design punctuated by naturalistic decor like animal sculpture and a central tree.
